[ A day or two after the paycheck from the gods comes through, there's another tiny deposit in Shinji's account, supposedly from nowhere. Enjoy your five bucks worth of dora. ]
[Today was the promised day, and Kai had promised to help. Did Shinji need the help? Apparently not, but Kai was here anyway with all of his arms that were perfectly suited for carrying things from one house to another.
So here was Kai, standing in Shinji's current house with his arms out.]
Just load me up, okay. Or point me at things to grab?
[He may not have necessarily needed the extra help - a trip or two on his own would be plenty to move around the few things Shinji's managed to gather in his time here. Kai showing up to help does cut that effort in half easily, but it also manages to keep Shinji from slipping between restrained excitement and completely second-guessing whether this as a good idea or not.
Having Kai right there, clearly on board with all of this, it's a big weight off his shoulders.]
There's really not much. [It's mostly just whatever clothing he's managed to get his hands on that he's boxed up, alongside a small handful of other necessities. His SDAT he can just pocket, along with his tablet, which really just leaves the cello as the big-ticket moving item.] I guess, just the box should be good?
[Easier on Kai than having him try to navigate around with the cello, he figures!]
This had in no way been an actual planned venture.
The happenstances for even getting the idea were all extremely circumstantial. He was just in the right place at the right time! Or something! Whatever the case may have been, this was now a guy on a vague mission as he popped back home. Was that Shinji in the living room? Hi Shinji.
"Hey," he greeted and-- no, that was it. He was gone down the hallway. Huh, wasn't that weird?
And there he went again, headed straight back out of the house. Were those blankets draped over his arms? Maybe? What a mysterious mystery.
Eventually, there was Kaito proper. He was popping back in to lean against the hall wall completely non-suspiciously. Definitely.
Shinji had been more than happy to let this day pass without incident. Nothing too weird happening with Havenwell? That's plenty fine for him. He knows he can't expect a whole lot, and even 'please just be normal for a little while' isn't a guarantee around here! But, everything shapes up to be quiet and normal, and he has no issue with letting the day just... be that.
Kai's first greeting is met with a, "Welcome home," from Shinji before he makes his way down the hall and then... back outside? H u h. How curious. He watches this short back and forth unfold until Kai stops and very casually takes that spot against the wall. Hey.
"No, not right now." No plans here! "Something going on...?"
Care to shed some light on this mysterious plot of yours?
I've been wondering... Could you teach me more about music? You're the only person who I know has a music instrument and know about music, and I've been wanting to do more with my shamisen lately.
Only if you're not busy, though!
[ More like spend less time at his own house, but that's an excuse he'll say if actually asked. ]
I don't know how good of a teacher I would be, but I wouldn't mind showing you some things, if you're interested. I'd like to hear you playing the shamisen, too, I've never actually hard someone performing with one live before.
I can make time pretty much whenever, my schedule's really flexible. Just let me know if there's any time that works best for you.
There had been the idea to get a different house. It hadn't taken long after deciding that was a good idea to go look at their choices. It hadn't been all that long after that to settle on one. And so, suddenly and with very little fanfare, there was another house.
This was that house. Even between the two of them, they hadn't acquired too much stuff to make it a very strenuous move. There were just a number of new things to stare at and maybe move around and boy. Maybe there hadn't been a lot too it but it was still pretty exhausting.
Hence one rowdy boy flopping face first on a bed in an extremely ungraceful fashion. Wow!
There may not have been a huge amount of effort put into actually moving everything from one house to another, but Shinji can't stop the excited buzz the adventure brings with it. Arranging everything, getting their belongings settled, all of that on top of the general hubbub is enough to make the allure of a nice, comfy bed simply too magnetic to resist.
So, it's no surprise to find Kai giving in to that very temptation! Gotta give the new bed a test run, huh? And what a perfect opportunity for Shinji to gently trail his fingertips over Kai's back.
[ Whether Shinji leaves the house first this morning or Kaito does, they’ll find two letters left neatly on their doorstep, weighed down against chilly breezes by a small container of actual strawberries. Did they know she had those yet? How early was she sneaking around outside their house to make this delivery? Mysteries.
Both letters are addressed in a flowery but very neat script, the same that fills up the notes inside. ]
Good morning, Shinji-san!
Thank you for the letter, the other day. I’m sorry I didn’t respond right away. To tell the truth, I was so happy that I had to stop myself a few times, until I could slow down enough to write out my thoughts carefully and properly. Writing a real letter sure feels serious, doesn’t it? I should take more care than I would with a normal text message, right? That’s what I was thinking.
But I was really, really so happy!
It’s true that I can’t say I want to be in a place like this. When I first got here, making friends wasn’t on my mind at all. But even a selfish person like me managed to wind up with someone gentle looking out for me, when I didn’t ask for it, and he doesn’t have any obligation to think of me at all. Please forgive the fool who spent such a long time wishing we could be friends, while you already knew we were. She’s always been a real idiot.
I want you to know, you do make this place brighter, for sure--not only for me, but today I’m selfishly thanking you just for myself. So thank you very much for that, and for being my friend. I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart--no, my stomach!--no, all the way down to my ankles!
--Kyoko
[an actual gosh dang phone call - after kyoko mistles]
This was, by now, something that should have been a familiar song and dance.
Shinji had extended the offer for Kaworu to come over before, the opportunity was always there! It didn't feel right pushing the issue too hard, though, and his interactions with Kaworu had been scarce and cautious ones as a result. Still, every so often Shinji would take out his communicator, find Kaworu's contact information, and then eventually, ultimately, succumb to hits own doubts over his importance, and lose his nerve before actually reaching out again. Kaworu had made it known that he didn't want to stay here. Shinji wanted to make sure his time here was nevertheless pleasant while it lasted. With that in mind, surely the other boy would want the freedom to explore on his own, without feeling obligated to keep Shinji company. Surely, if he wanted to take Shinji up on his offer, he would. He was right here, and that door was always open.
It wasn't the first time Shinji found himself sitting on the couch, searching his communicator in order to go through this process again, but it was the first time his search had come up... empty.
There's a very quick moment where his thoughts immediately suggest going to Kaworu's house, try to find him there, but the idea lasts only for a moment. Shinji... doesn't actually know where he's been staying. More importantly, this wouldn't be the first time someone's information has vanished so suddenly. The creeping realization that he knows what this means overtakes that flash of desperation, and Shinji's left to sit and stare at the contact slot where Kaworu's information should have been.
Ah. He got to leave.
That's good, he forces himself to think. That's what Kaworu had wanted.
It doesn't stop him from feeling absolutely gutted, and it doesn't stop the utterly hollow sensation that follows it. He's not even sure he has it in himself to cry over it - it's familiar enough to the last time Kaworu had left his life, which left him far beyond the point of crying. It's not as overwhelmingly crushing as it had been then. If anything, is just an echo of that past sorrow's magnitude, but the end result is similar enough. He had gotten what he wanted, which was to go back to their world, the world with no place left for him to actually go back to. Kaworu would rather return to being dead than to stay here.
For a few, long moments, Shinji simply stares at the communicator held loosely in his hands, trying to process everything through the haze of disbelief that's settled over his thoughts. Soon enough, the device is released, set down onto his lap to free his hands up. Elbows braced against knees, he laces his fingers together in front of himself so that he can learn forward and rest his head against them.
He'll be okay. Somewhere in his mind, Shinji knows he won't be allowed to fall anywhere near as far as he had in the past. But, for now, the unaddressed grief that he had left his world with demands his attention.
Eventually, who knows when, another weight settled right there beside him.
The sight of Shinji sitting so tensely on his own had been enough to quiet whatever greeting had been on Kaito's lips. It only took a moment to know that something wasn't right, and a moment more for him to cross the room to him. A warm hand laid on his back. It was an unspoken invitation for whatever he needed.
Peace had been achieved. It was a relief to know that things had gone smoothly and without any time wasted. Things would be just fine, just like Kai knew they would be. They'd just be... a little different, and there really wasn't anything wrong with that. Just people learning to get along better and all that. Probably. People were complicated. Feelings were complicated.
The relief that came with knowing that things had smoothed out really just ended up highlighting that Kai's complicated feelings were still right there. There was some consolation in that a lot of other things made more sense. Realizing that the feeling that had been just outside his grasp but felt so familiar was love all over again really put some things in perspective.
He just... didn't know what to do with it, knowing it didn't really have anywhere to go.
Keeping it under lock and key was certainly an option. It just didn't feel right to keep it completely in the dark like it was some terrible kind of secret. Kai didn't think Kyoko's secret was a bad one, and he didn't think this one was either. It was just... weird? Was it weird? To love two different people at the same time? Just loving one person was already a wild enough concept, but two? He'd been thinking about it for days now and he was no closer to knowing on his own. The only conclusion that he'd come to was that talking about it was probably a good idea. He wanted to be honest. Shinji deserved it, and Kai wasn't about to let some shenanigans twist his feelings into something he was hiding from him. Because he wasn't!
With that in mind, Kaito had wandered through the house to locate the other boy with every intention of getting around to that conversation. If he happened to wander in on some cello practice first though, well. It could wait a song or two or three. Kai would just help himself to his usual spot on the couch to listen. Keep doing your thing, Shinji.
If a cello listening session is what you want, Kai, then that's exactly what you'll find. With the instrument tuned up to the best of Shinji's ability with the new supplies so graciously gifted to him on his birthday, the quality of the sounds being pulled from its strings are nice and smooth. When Kai first approaches, those sounds feel a little less like a cohesive piece, and more like notes being tested out together, melodies being experimentally pieced together and tweaked, though to what end may be unclear as the nature of this practice seems to shift when Kai plops himself down on the couch.
The last month had sucked in a lot of ways, obvious and not. Rebuilding and cleaning up after the worms was a helpful distraction for a chunk of the time, but it couldn't fill every moment. That left plenty of opportunities for the ever-present looming Threat of Something to keep boys wound up and stressed. It was hard not to notice, especially when neither of them were probably getting the best of sleep and when one particularly herdy dog was keeping extra close tabs on his flock.
Today the rigid line of Shinji's shoulders bothered Kai more than it had yesterday. Once they had gotten home from wherever it was they'd been doing things, Kai took Shinji's hand back in his. "Come sit with me for a bit."
Oh? Is he needed for something else? Something about the wording of that strikes Shinji as an opening for Some Kind of Talk, but he can't think of anything pressing that they may need to actually talk about off the top of his head. Is there something on Kai's mind, he wonders? Something he may have missed...? He lets his hand get caught either way, putting up no fuss despite the extra bit of worry getting stirred up around his heart. Easy, now, Shinji, there's no reason to jump to any conclusions.
"Mm, okay." To the couch, then? Just lead the way, Kaito.
[That was one set of anticipated talks down. Even if it had gone really well and he'd sorted things out with Kyoko, it still kind of felt like he was going from one dog house to the other. That was perhaps the burden that came with knowing he'd disappointed both of the only people whose opinions mattered to him in one fell swoop. Kyoko was at least loud with her disapproval. Shinji...
Kai had a feeling if he didn't bring it up, the whole thing would just float away. Maybe out to sea, or maybe just down river, ready to jam everything up later. That wasn't good.
He didn't knock this time, this was his room! But he did peek in as he opened the door, scoping out what Shinji was up to. It was a bit late now, was he sleeping?]
[Don't knock on your own door, that's silly. Moreover, Shinji might not have even heard it right away if he had - he'd decided to pop his headphones in after Kai had left for Kyoko's room, as if that was going to give them some extra privacy through the walls, or something. Maybe he just wanted a little distraction to wind down with after the hubbub of having an extra person in the house. He sincerely didn't mind having Cliff drop in! But having it be so unexpected was a surprise, and it definitely made things livelier than usual. Give him a bit of time to recoup the energy he needed to deal with it.
The movement at the door catches his attention better, anyway. Once he spots Kai, he sits up and hits pause on the tape player with a soft 'click'.]
[He still hasn't totally worked out the details, but it's time to try and be sneaky.]
Hey man, got a question Kai told me that Kyoko's bday is coming up but I don't really know what to get her He wasn't that helpful which is pretty sad, just "girl things" Can I just ask her what she'd like or would that ruin some kind of surprise you guys are doing?
I don't think it would ruin any surprises, but if you asked her what she wanted I wouldn't be surprised if she told you not to worry about it, honestly. I think if you want to get her something, she's the one who's really good at baking, and she likes doing crafty projects. Crocheting and sewing, stuff like that. Maybe something like nice hand towels for the kitchen? Or some spare yarn or fabric, she'd probably like things like that.
Give it a couple of days, but Kyoko will eventually find a pair of nail polish bottles left on the desk in her room while she's out, one peachy pink and one coral pink. Weird. I wonder where those came from.]
[All right, since it seems like the nail polish went over well the first time around
In a couple of days, there will be two new bottles gracing Kyoko's desk once more, this time in a somewhat more daring set of colors - a soft lilac and a tangerine yellow. All the better for prettying up Kaito as well as herself.]
Hi Shinji! We can talk about this in person if you want, I'm just in my room right now, but I'm trying to be stealthy. But anyway, have you already settled on a White Day gift for Kaito, by any chance?
I've been trying to think it over, but... I haven't really come up with anything that can really match the caliber of what he did. He's become a really powerful gift-giver.
[backdated to early in the month!]
A lil backdated to April Somethin' Somethin//
So here was Kai, standing in Shinji's current house with his arms out.]

~november time~
Today the rigid line of Shinji's shoulders bothered Kai more than it had yesterday. Once they had gotten home from wherever it was they'd been doing things, Kai took Shinji's hand back in his. "Come sit with me for a bit."

"Mm, okay." To the couch, then? Just lead the way, Kaito.

surprise i'm back - after cliff shenanigans and kyoko talks
Kai had a feeling if he didn't bring it up, the whole thing would just float away. Maybe out to sea, or maybe just down river, ready to jam everything up later. That wasn't good.
He didn't knock this time, this was his room! But he did peek in as he opened the door, scoping out what Shinji was up to. It was a bit late now, was he sleeping?]
stuffs so many bret threads into my pockets
The movement at the door catches his attention better, anyway. Once he spots Kai, he sits up and hits pause on the tape player with a soft 'click'.]
Everything okay...?

12/14 ish
Hey man, got a question
Kai told me that Kyoko's bday is coming up but I don't really know what to get her
He wasn't that helpful which is pretty sad, just "girl things"
Can I just ask her what she'd like or would that ruin some kind of surprise you guys are doing?
no subject
I don't think it would ruin any surprises, but if you asked her what she wanted I wouldn't be surprised if she told you not to worry about it, honestly. I think if you want to get her something, she's the one who's really good at baking, and she likes doing crafty projects. Crocheting and sewing, stuff like that. Maybe something like nice hand towels for the kitchen? Or some spare yarn or fabric, she'd probably like things like that.

Well guess what then.
Congrats yourself. While Kyoko is out, a few skeins of yarn will be left on her bed in pink, purple, and orange. Enjoy!]

Give it a couple of days, but Kyoko will eventually find a pair of nail polish bottles left on the desk in her room while she's out, one peachy pink and one coral pink. Weird. I wonder where those came from.]

party ]

In a couple of days, there will be two new bottles gracing Kyoko's desk once more, this time in a somewhat more daring set of colors - a soft lilac and a tangerine yellow. All the better for prettying up Kaito as well as herself.]
but also [text]
We can talk about this in person if you want, I'm just in my room right now, but I'm trying to be stealthy.
But anyway, have you already settled on a White Day gift for Kaito, by any chance?
[text]
I've been trying to think it over, but... I haven't really come up with anything that can really match the caliber of what he did. He's become a really powerful gift-giver.
