Who are they?: Gently slides you a copypaste personality section
Shinji is, at his core, a very gentle and passive person. He is introduced as a character who sort of just drifts along in life, and claims that this is a lifestyle he is okay with. He spends most of the series questioning both the necessity for the fighting that he and his companions are forced in to, as well as the morality of it all. In doing so, he appears to be one of the very few characters interested in information of that variety at all. He's far more inquisitive about the world than he is eager to fight, which can come as a sort of double-edged sword - Shinji shows on several occasions a reluctance to fight even if the situation has turned dire.

This isn't to say he's a complete push-over, either. His temper is typically mild, but it does show itself from time to time. A good example comes from his interactions with one of the girls he winds up living with - a strong willed girl named Asuka who constantly butts heads with Shinji. He, at first, simply seems to take their clashing in stride, with perhaps a bit of annoyance, but the more he's pushed by her, the more he begins to push back. Other instances of Shinji's temper come from feelings of betrayal, or extreme cases of his feelings being hurt, though through most normal situations the worst someone may get from him is an occasionally sassy remark toward those he feels comfortable with.

An enormous factor in the way Shinji grew into the person he became is the fact that, while still incredibly young, he suddenly found himself without any family. His father left him in the care of his teacher after an accident caused the disappearance of his mother. Whether or not this was truly an accidental incident is highly debated, out of and in canon, as well as in front of the young boy. The implications that his father had a hand in the incident involving his mother, as well as Shinji being left by him shortly afterward, gave him deep-seated issues with dependency, being abandoned, and depression.

His biggest motivator is being praised. He displays a great ability to overcome his own, more minor mental blocks with the simple thought of, 'If I do this, people will like me'. It may come off to others as him simply trying to cater to others, but if he ends up with the desired outcome, it does wonders for his sense of self-worth. Though, this trait makes it simple for others to manipulate him in to doing what they want him to do, and on a certain level, he's aware of this. He can, and sometimes will, resist this trait, but more often than not will allow himself to bend to the whims of others, especially if there's a chance that he will be accepted or praised for doing so.

In the same vein, his biggest fear is being rejected by people. This tends to lead to extremes of him not making connections with people in the first place, or acting overly compliant as to not provoke any sort of backlash. As desperate as he is deep down for affection and friendship, his fear of hurting someone or being hurt himself leads to some rather anti-social behavior. Conversely, once he has made a bond with someone, he's incredibly loyal to them - again, not wanting them to leave his side. This selective loyalty of his can be problematic, though, and sometimes lead to incredibly skewed priorities, such as refusing to do something that might potentially harm one person he is close with, while doing so would save hundreds more (including himself).

The fear Shinji holds for being rejected is very much a problem he is aware of. He's a person who is conscious of the fact that he does have a nasty habit of escaping most situations he finds himself in that are unpleasant, even if it's only something he realizes deep down. There are several instances of his sub-conscious being probed and revealing his own criticisms of this particular habit. He has taken the phrase, 'I mustn't run away', as a sort of mantra for himself, and while he does continue to withdraw from unpleasant situations simply because he wishes to not deal with them, he does find himself confronting these issues later after reevaluating his actions.

Shinji is incredibly emotional. He feels a lot of things, and he feels them strongly. He won't always display his true feelings, often finding it more appealing to either try and fit what he believes other people's image of him might be, or simply bottling them up in order to avoid conflict with others. This trait, coupled with major abandonment issues brought on early in his life, has helped him develop a rather fragile ego. A lot of his personality quirks stem back to this particular flaw of his, and it's an essential part of who he is.

Most importantly, Shinji is a person who is extremely full of potential. He is constantly being tasked with missions that have slim odds, and he winds up on top again and again, despite all the struggles he goes through in order to achieve his goals. When presented with the idea of another world, one where he can live a "normal" life, he chooses to reject that in favor of the life he has lived. In doing so, he comes to realize that his life has meaning, as long as he can accept himself.

CRAU?: Yeah!!
Shinji spent three years on a planet called Aellyn, where he and a number of other characters from other worlds were tasked with saving the planet through the power of touch. While he was unsure of his ability to help with this specific task, after a few days of isolating himself, he warmed up enough to the idea to give it his best.

During his stay, he met many people that helped acclimate him to the new life he found himself in, gun-shy as he may be as far as touch is concerned. Most critically, Kyoko Mogami and Kaito McLastname, the latter of whom he began a romantic relationship with after months of growing close. The two of them eventually convince Kyoko to live with them, and she begins a romantic relationship with Kaito as well - a somewhat rocky shift in the group's dynamic that soon settled into something mostly balanced. Other important connections forged include that of Magolor, an otherworldly merchant whose straightforward and brusque demeanor helped cut through a lot of Shinji's initial hesitancy around being in Havenwell, as well as Alfyn Greengrass, an apothecary who planted an interest in gardening in Shinji's head, something he held on to through the remainder of his time in Havenwell.

Also notable is a brief couple of encounters with a castmate, Kaworu Nagisa. While the meetings were not exactly bad, they left him with a sense that he shouldn't cling too tightly on to his past, and begin to move towards a better future of his own making.

His progression towards becoming a better version of himself has been slow but steady, helped along well by the largely comfortable (though at times genuinely fraught) lifestyle afforded to him in Havenwell and the kind people around him. He is far from healed from the events he lived through in his world, but he's doing better now than he was before.
